Do you have a colicky baby? Probiotics may be your answer!

January 10, 2018

Colic is a term used when an otherwise healthy baby (ie. no reflux or other underlying condition) cries continuously for hours on end (the definition is more than 3 hours of continuous crying, more than 3 days a week, for more than 3 weeks.... though this seems a somewhat arbitrary definition to me!).

To parents with a colicky baby, you could pretty much describe it as absolute hell. You feel completely hopeless, unable to soothe your crying bub, and you become willing to try just about anything to JUST. MAKE. IT. STOP!

I personally tried gripe water, infants friend, massage, trying to get them to take a dummy, warm towels on the baby's tummy, an elimination diet (me), making bicycle legs, using a vibrating bouncer and swing, bouncing them three times and spinning them on their heads.... (ok, that last one was a joke.....).

Well it turns out friends, it's the little bugs in your babies digestive tract that may hold the answer. Recently it was found that supplementation with the 'beneficial' bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri (0.2 × 108 colony-forming units per drop, 5 drops orally per day) was twice as likely to reduce colic symptoms in babies that were exclusively breastfeed. By day 28 of supplementation, median crying time reduced to 51 minutes per day, as opposed to 145 minutes per day in the control group. Interestingly, the results were not so positive in formula fed babies, but researchers have not got to the bottom of why this is so just yet.

If colic is a concern to you and you would like to find out more about probiotic supplementation for your bub, book a consultation and we can chat about what is best for you and your little one.
